Phosphorylated serine puzzle 903 segment 14

A phosphorylated serine, a type of post-translational modification. (Puzzle 903, segment 14.)

A post-translational modification, also known as a PTM, is a change to a protein that occurs after its peptide bonds have formed.

One common PTM is the removal of the methionine amino acid that starts each protein during translation. The formation of disulfide bridges is also a type of PTM.

Another type of PTM involves changing the chemical structure of the amino acids in a protein. PTMs of this type are important biologically, and quite common, but they usually aren't represented in sources like the Protein Data Bank (PDB).

In Foldit, only a few puzzles have included PTMs that added chemical groups to an amino acid.

Phosphorylation, adding a phosphate group to an amino acid, was seen on one segment of Puzzle 903: Brain Cancer-Related Phosphorylated Id2.

Glycosylation, adding a glycan to an amino acid, has been seen in three puzzles:

In each of these puzzles, the same glycan was used, and only one segment of teach protein was affected.
